This cake is a family tradition in Israel’s family. It has been handed down from his grandmother. This is recipe is actually in her handwriting back from 1st May 1985. How special is that? This cake is so simple to make with everything being done in one pot. There’s numerous ways you can get your kids in involved in cooking this too. I have made a few tweaks to the recipe using butter instead of marg, less sugar (for my family 1/4-1/2 cup but for friends who aren’t quite where we’re at 3/4), and I use wholemeal self raising flour. You can watch me making the cake below.
Turning The Cake Into A Special Birthday Cake
I made 2 of these cakes, then whipped up some cream so it was firm then sandwiched the 2 cakes together like you see in the top photo of this recipe. Then I made a vanilla butter cream icing with maltesers for the number 13. I have included the recipe for the icing at the bottom of this recipe.
Butter Cream Icing
Ingredients
- 125g butter, cubed and at room temperature
- 175g icing sugar
- 1 tspn vanilla bean paste
- 1 tblspn milk
Method
- Mix butter and icing sugar together until the butter turns white
- Add vanilla bean paste and milk and mix until smooth
